First Listen Review: Nic Hessler – “Soft Connections”

Nic-Hessler-Soft-Connections

The Good: Like Travis Bretzer was to Mac Demarco, this guy is to Wild Nothing. Both take the sounds of each band and add a little late 1950s twist, with a sort of retro nostalgia behind it.  The guitars are jangly and the note-picking, especially on the slower material, sounds like something I would have heard on a Chuck Berry tune concerning the beach. There are some excellent melodies on here and it’s a little more poppy than Wild Nothing, a little more guitar centered as well. This boy has been playing for many years too, and he is only 23.

The Bad: Sometimes the music behind him is kind of boring and middle of the road, as well as lacking melody. It lacks some added instrument like a keyboard too.

Would I Listen Again: Maybe
